Is our school meeting the needs of our special education students?

Posted by ftepta on January 30, 2009 at 3:39 PM

Part of the PTA's mission is to be a resource for parents.  A parent brought to my attention that the needs of her special education student weren't being met.  I was especially concerned because she didn't want to be involved in the PTA because of her unpleasant experiences with the school.

At times, we all feel that the needs of our children aren't being met.; however, it's important that we get more involved instead of becoming less involved.  It doesn't solve anything when you withdraw.  You could use your experiences to help someone else going through the same or similar situation, if you speak up.  The only way that the PTA can truly be a resource, is to hear from it's members.

I appreciate the parent that expressed her concerns with the PTA.  We would like to hear from others as well.  Let us help!

My son is currently in a special ed. class. Although he is getting the one-on-one attention he needs, there is so much more that can be done to help him and others with similar learning and developmental disorders. It is an ongoing struggle, but he is on track academically. Like most special needs kids, he excels in art and mind games (brain teaser puzzles). The school is so focused on curriculums, that there just isn't time for such activities. Mr. Fields is a wonderful art teacher, but we have to share him with other schools so students only see him once a week, if that. We need to encourage the strengths of these kids and figure out a way to incorparte the academics into those strengths. His teachers all find it difficult to deal with my son's emotional sensitivities. Plus, we keep having errors on the weekly homework sheets that go home (primarily with spelling words and testing dates) so that we never know for sure which test is when and on which words. My son needs a solid routine in order to function and inconsistancies like this throw him into a downward spiral, in addition to receiving lower test scores because we studied the wrong word list.
